Community-Based Participatory Research: Insights, Challenges, and Successes From the Perspectives of Frontline Recruiters and Investigators

Employment of community-based participatory research (CBPR) strategies has helped address limitations traditional approaches, but we still do not have a full understanding how study teams successfully conduct with populations who experience health disparities. To gain insights into the unique successes and challenges conducting National Institutes Health (NIH) funded community-engaged studies, conducted an online survey 120 investigators identified through NIH RePORTER 106 members academic team (research staff) assisted recruitment. We examined descriptive statistics used Chi-square analysis to compare responses between staff. Most studies targeted low-income, racial/ethnic minority reported high recruitment retention rates. The most common collaborators were organizations, purpose was evaluate intervention. There generally consensus staff about effective strategies, barriers, facilitators. However, there also some critical differences, including perceptions community partner roles value input design methods. After presentation our key findings, share best practices for successful in disparities using CBPR approaches.
